What is a Cavity Nester?

A cavity nester is a bird that utilizes nesting holes (cavities) for nesting (laying and incubating eggs, and rearing chicks through fledging). There are roughly 85 species of cavity nesting birds in North America (more).

Nest-Blog

1 May - 7 May 2011

There have been Violet-green Swallows inspecting the house and nest box during the sunny days.  A few days ago I thought I had new tenants as there was nesting material within the nest box.  Waiting to see what was bringing it I was amazed to see it was a male House Sparrow.  The hole size is generally too small for this species, but this individual is think enough to squeeze in.

After a few days he can no longer fit into the box, or not often at least, so I am working on trapping him.  He is defending from other birds.

Mid March - 30 MaRCH 2011

I put out the nest box from last year with matching placement from the past two successful years.  The weather is still cold and wet but there is activity in the neighborhood.  Black-capped Chickadees can be heard calling.  Oddly, the neighbors next door who has had House Sparrow's nesting the past several years has a complete vacancy of HOSP.  There are many calling across the street though, but they are not making their way to this side of the street.

08 February 2011

Work has once again commenced on the web site after a long hiatus.  After speaking with friends last weekend I was asked by some if I was going to host a streaming nest-cam again and I indicated it was my hope, but I need a new graphics card for my PC as my old one has died.  I am working on getting one that will power the demands of the camera before the nesting season commences.

Over the past week there has been a Northern Flicker prospecting the yard and knocking on the metal chimney each morning.  I hope to get a nest box out for them to discover this season.

Species We Expect

We expected either Violet-Green Swallows or Black-capped Chickadees this year.  There is also a Northern Flicker prospecting so I may put up a box for them as well.

2011 - A New Season

The 2011 nesting season is approaching and preparations are being made to be ready for what is in store.

What is new for 2011:

  • Continued work on this web site.  The web site will serve the following functions:
    • Be an education portal to cavity nesting birds
    • Provide information on bird house design and construction
    • Provide information on nest cams
    • Foster and advocate for conservation of cavity nesting birds
    • Serve as the main web site for the streaming nest box in Seattle Washington

You will notice that most of the web site is not complete.  It will be an ongoing process to complete it.
